Mold/Moisture Overview The conditions necessary for growing mold are very similar to those desired for human occupancy. The single most important and controllable requirement for mold growth is water. The identification and remediate of any mold problem begins with locating the source of moisture. Turner Building Science, LLC. personnel use their knowledge of design of new construction along with years of forensic evaluations to find the root cause of mold problems. Moisture Sources Even inexperienced investigators easily find and repair obvious sources of moisture, such as roof and pluming leaks. Turner Building Science, LLC. understands the complex pressure differentials and construction details that can cause mold within a wall cavity to create an exposure problem on a different level of the building. We specialize in identifying solutions to problems involving vapor transmission, elevated humidity, and condensation problems within the building envelope. Testing for Mold Turner Building Science, LLC. can provide mold testing using airborne surface or bulk sampling methods. We have provided many building evaluations including sampling for mold. However, mold testing is not generally required if a potential source of mold exposure is found. Unless required for exposure assessment, mold sampling usually provides little useful information beyond a visual observation and detailed review of the construction. Our recommended evaluation procedure begins with drawing review and observation of the building construction to identify potential problems. We typically do not provide mold sampling as an initial investigative tool. Remediation Alternatives Turner Building Science, LLC. has employed many different remediation strategies for mold problems in buildings. Eliminating the moisture source has been as simple as modifying the air handling system and as complex as replacement of the entire building shell. Each solution is unique to the moisture problem and includes a plan for containment and isolation of the mold source during remediation. |
